TRANSMISSOMETERS are to be installed at Perth Airport in the wake of recent fog event which sent thousands of travellers’ travel plans into disarray. The devices, sometimes known as hazemeters or affectionately as Daleks, use beams to determine visibility.
It will enable arriving aircraft to land in 550m visibility instead of the current 800m. Perth Airport is consulting with Airservices Australia on upgrading the current Category – 1 Instrument Landing System to a Category – 3 which deems zero visibility landings. Currently, Melbourne is the only Australian city to have this technology.
A final proposal by the airport to the airlines is expected in the next few weeks. If the airlines agree, they will fund partial upgrade of the Landing System.
Last year, there were less than 10 days where flights to and from Perth were hampered by fog.
