The Public Transport Authority has awarded the contract for the construction of the new Forrestfield-Airport rail line to Salini Impregilo, Italy, and local company NRW Pty, making the prospect of a train service to and from the city and airport one step closer.
The $1.18 billion project will connect with the existing Midland Line near Bayswater Station, and will run entirely underground in an eight kilometre tunnel, passing beneath the Swan River and the Airport to reach Forrestfield Station. Within the airport estate, two stations will be built, namely ‘Airport West’ and ‘Airport Central’.
Western Australian premier, Colin Barnett said;
This is a huge milestone on the path to delivering this project, which will change the face of Perth’s eastern corridor and give people direct access to the airport by public transport.
It is the biggest expansion of the city’s rail system since the Mandurah rail line was completed.
The project is expected to be completed by 2020.
